JOHANNESBURG - Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has condemned the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s advert demonstrating the burning of the South African flag.

The DA on Sunday unveiled its election TV advert, warning voters that the country would burn to ashes under what it called an ANC-EFF doomsday coalition.

The advert has sparked a social media storm, with over one million views on X and thousands of comments.

The minister has labeled the advert unpatriotic, citing the flag as a symbol of unity.

He added that it was offensive to the gains the country has made as a free and non-racial democracy.

The minister's spokesperson, Litha Mpondwana: "This action by the Democratic Alliance offends the gains South Africa has made as a free and non-racial democracy, and the blood, tears and sacrifices it took for the country to gain this freedom. It offends all South Africans who proudly raise our country’s flag sky high and appreciate its representation as the flag of a free, democratic and non-racial nation."
