CAPE TOWN -  A State witness has implicated one of alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack's co-accused, Jacques Cronje, for intimidation and extortion.

The witness, who is an asset manager, testified that he fell victim to death threats and extortion after a high-risk investment went wrong.

Modack and his 14 co-accused are facing 124 charges for various crimes related to allegedly running a criminal enterprise.

The Western Cape High Court on Monday heard how Cronje allegedly made death threats to the witness, who can only be identified as "Mister C", after an investment was lost.

Mister C said that he was introduced to a client who made a high-risk R545,000 investment, with an aim to quadruple the money.

The witness said when the investment was lost, the client started sending him threatening messages to pay back the money.

Mister C said that after being led to a meeting with another potential client, Cronje showed up with three other men and told the witness he was there to collect R2.5 million on behalf of the client.

He told the court after agreeing to make an initial payment of R90,000 it failed to go through and Cronje then left, insisting that the payment be made the next day.

Mister C said that after enduring numerous death threats, he then enlisted the services of criminal attorney, William Booth.
