Sex workers rights group, SWEAT said over the past two months six prostitutes have been murdered across the country.

SWEAT claims the most recent murders occurred in the Western Cape.

The organisation’s Diane Massawe explained that between July and August at least six prostitutes were murdered in Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

She said most of the victims were killed while they were working and some of the bodies were mutilated.

The two most recent murders took place over the past three weeks in the Mfuleni area in Cape Town.

Sex workers are often seen as easy targets by criminals, Massawe said in an interview.

“Skollies or gangsters are seeing vulnerable women who are working, women who are making money and that’s an easy way for them to get money to attack the women.”

Police have confirmed the murders but admitted that they have not yet established a motive the attacks.
