SA Roadlink insists its buses are safe

SA Roadlink has moved to assure the public it strictly adheres to all operating and road safety regulations.

The bus company made headlines recently after seven people died and dozens others were injured in an accident involving one of its vehicles outside Beaufort West.

A number of its buses have recently been taken off the road during traffic operations in the Cape for not having the required operating permits.

SA Roadlink vehicles have been involved in at least six deadly accidents since 2006. But despite its questionable track record, it is ranked as the 13th least safe bus operator in the country.

The company insists its drivers are not permitted to be on duty for longer than four hours at a time – this amounts to 48 hours driving time every week.

After each journey, staff must rest for 12 hours before getting back behind the wheel.

SA Roadlink says devices have been installed in some of its vehicles to monitor driver fatigue. They also intend installing CCTV cameras to monitor speeding, amongst other things.
