Madagascar peace talks under threat

Madagascar’s ousted president Marc Ravalomanana has rejected coup leader Andry Rajoelina as the transitional head of his country.

He says the agreement to have elections on the island at the end of next year will not work if this happens.

Multi-party talks to find a transitional leader for Madagascar broke down in Mozambique last Friday.

It is now clear Rajoelina’s insistence that he fill the position is the stumbling block.

Ravalomanana says the compromise that restored hope in Madagascar after a year of political crisis is threatened by this.

There has not be consensus on Rajoelina’ s position and talks brokered by former Mozambique president Joachim Chissano are threatened.

The political parties have given themselves until the end of this week to agree on a transitional leader.
