A taxi driver who drove into a department store in central Durban has died after being shot.

Police say the taxi was travelling the wrong way on a one-way street when it ploughed into a busy Edgars store on Monday, injuring several bystanders.

Hundreds of people gathered at the site, hoping to catch a glimpse of the scene.

Police cordoned off the area and are waiting for crime scene investigators to comb the scene for evidence.

Police say one of the worker’s was shot in the leg.

It is still unclear who opened fire first.
