Community leaders in Citrusdal
said they were not happy with the manner in which talks aimed at easing tensions
related to learners who could not be accommodated at a local school were proceeding.
Angry parents and other
community members marched on the Citrusdal
High School on Monday; demanding
that more than 300 primary school learners be accommodated there.
This as there is no space to
accommodate them at the local primary school.
Meanwhile some of the angry
parents have accused the school of racism.
Western Cape Education MEC Donald
Grant has dismissed claims that learners were being excluded because of their race.
Grant added that the overcrowded
primary school is a no-fee school; while the high school is a fee paying institution.
The department said it sent
two senior officials tasked with settling the matter.
Community leader Andries Titus
however, said it did not appear as though the provincial education department was
taking the matter seriously enough.
“We’ve told them that they should
rather get somebody who can make decisions on the matter. It was clear that they
can’t make any decisions and that they were playing with time. We told them if they
were serious about this issue they should go back and get someone who can make decision
and then we can continue,” said Titus.
