The South African Weather Service has predicted more heavy storms in and around Johannesburg on Friday.

On Thursday the city’s roads were plunged into chaos by a cloudburst which struck in the late afternoon.

The downpour caused flooding on routes throughout Johannesburg, while rivers like the Sandspruit and Jukskei burst their banks.

The police’s air-wing conducted a brave rescue of ten children whose school transport was washed away by flood waters in Alexandra, while Emergency Services officials had to dig cars out of the mud after they got stuck on a flooded bridge on Witkoppen Road.

The Johannesburg metro police’s Edna Mamonyane said the flooded roads were reopened but the Weather Service’s Louis Fernandes said more rain could be on the way.

“Today over Johannesburg and the general Gauteng region we are forecasting a 30 percent chanCe of thundershowers,” said Mamonyane.

Emergency services officials called on people to stay away from streams and rivers throughout the province.

Emfuleni Municipality water rescue teams are on standby in case of flooding in communities along the Vaal River.
