African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema on Thursday launched a scathing attack on former president FW de Klerk.
The youth league leader was addressing thousands of ANC supporters who have gathered in Paarl for a mass rally to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela.
The icon walked to freedom through the gates of the then Victor Verster Prison on 11 February 1990. Victor Verster is now know as Groot Drakenstein Correctional Facility.
Malema said racism and other socio-economic ills were the legacy of de Klerk and that he could not be compared to his successor.
He also accused the management of the prison of racism and called on the Correctional Services minister to investigate.
The youth league president’s comments were met with thunderous applause from the thousands of ANC members who were gathered at the prison.
ZUMA MISSES PAARL COMMEMORATIONS
President Jacob Zuma failed to arrive for the ceremony marking Mandela’s release.
He had been expected to address the thousands of ANC members gathered outside Groot Drakenstein.
Some people said they were hugely disappointed Zuma did not show face.
His appearance was cancelled at the last minute and he sent his deputy instead.
One woman said she understood why Zuma did not come as he must be under pressure preparing for the State of the Nation Address.
