The City of Cape Town has defended its new, multi-billion rand transport plan, stating that every cent invested in the project would be worth it.
The city’s Kylie Hatton spoke about the Integrated Rapid Transit System currently under construction on Wednesday.
She said the IRT project would transform the Mother City into one of the leading cities in the world.
The city is set to spend more than R2 billion on the new mode of transport, following a budget bungle which saw initial costs soar by R1 billion last year.
Hatton likened the system to that of London’s famed underground train link.
She added that the system would work should it get the right backing and support.
Construction in the city centre is set to be completed by May, with the inner city system in operating before the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Hatton said the city would finally have a reliable public transport system linking previously segregated areas, as well as unlocking multiple economical opportunities for the city and its people.
