The City of Cape Town said on Thursday its plan to overhaul public transport would improve more than just local travelling woes.
Despite delays plaguing the start of the Integrated Rapid Transit System, officials were convinced it would transform Cape Town into a leading international city.
When completed, the IRT will be the biggest single project ever implemented by the city but it has not been devoid of controversy.
Last year, an independent audit highlighted major budget discrepancies.
The project’s initial costs have since escalated from R1.4bn to over R2.3bn.
The city’s Kylie Hatton defended the investment, stating it was integral to the Mother City hosting a successful World Cup.
The initial phase of the project will be launched in May - ahead of the tournament.
