Protests blamed on misinformation

The Ekurhuleni Municipality has blamed Thursday’s early morning protests at the Ramaphosa informal settlement on misinformation.

Residents took to the streets and blockaded a main road and burnt toilets and tyres. The trouble started on Wednesday night.

Five people were arrested for public violence.

Ward committee member Sipho Vanga said residents did not want the chemical toilets supplied by the local council.

“After 15 years of democracy they are still bringing things like this. Ramaphosa is undeveloped. The service is poor here,” he said.

The municipality’s Zweli Dlamini said: “There was a lot of misinformation. There was a clique of people that instigated the people to start vandalising the mobile toilets we are providing as council to the people of Ramaphosa.”

There were a number of protests around Gauteng on Thursday. The areas affected include Ennerdale, Dobsonville, Daveyton, Finetown and Atteridgeville.
