ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said on Thursday he regretted one of the party’s senior members faced drunk driving charges.
Spokesperson Jackson Mthembu was arrested by members of Cape Town’s Ghost Squad on Thursday for allegedly driving under the influence.
Officials pulled him over after they spotted his car in the bus lane on the N2 highway.
Traffic and city officials told Eyewitness News Mthembu reeked of alcohol when he stepped out of the car.
Mantashe said the party could not turn a blind eye to what happened.
“It should actually be discouraged. The fact that he’s been arrested we would want to wait for that process to take its course and deal with it from there,” he said.
