Zim power company in massive debt

Zimbabwe’s power company owes regional power suppliers 100 million US dollars.

ZESA blames the ballooning debt on customers who aren’t paying their bills.

ZESA’s chief executive Ben Rafemoyo says it’s proving extremely difficult to whittle down this debt.

Many Zimbabweans say their bills are unreasonably high given that they spend most of the day in the dark.

Zimbabwe’s main power stations at Hwange and Kariba are in a poor shape – and the country’s had to revert to deals with others in the region for their refurbishment.

That means ZESA ends up exporting power – while locals go without
