A number of Cape Town retailers say soccer fans are pulling out all the stops to get their hands on World Cup memorabilia and suppporters gear.
Several clothing and sports stores say they are seeing increased sales of t-shirts, jackets and scarves bearing the national flag.
There has also been an increase in demand for official 2010 Bafana Bafana jerseys, soccer balls and flags, with a few outlets expected to run out of merchandise.
Edgars’ representative Haley Khan says sales have been very good.
“We believe the week before kick off is going to be exceptional. I think people are getting more and more excited as the time drawing near. We’ve seen a ramp up as the sales have increased. We just believe the patriotism and the excitement is just going to increase and heighten in the next couple of days.”
Kevin Lennett, operations executive at Sportsmans Warehouse, says they are afraid they might run out of Bafana Bafana jerseys.
“There’s no doubt people are picking up the vibe as it goes on. The original Bafana Bafana replica is still the best, but stock is very tight now. I think the country is going to be painted yellow.”
