Angry community members in Bloemfontein have said the Reitz Four are not paying enough for the humiliation they caused.

The four former Free State University students were fined R20 000 each in the city’s magistrates court on Friday morning.

RC Malherbe, Schalk van der Merwe, Johnny Roberts and Danie Grobler were found guilty of humiliating five hostel cleaners in a mock initiation video in 2008.

Bloemfontein residents who packed the court room during the three-day trial this week said the sentence is not harsh enough.

“I think they have played unfairly. I’m not satisfied with [the fine],” one resident said.

“The lenient sentence will not cleanse those people’s dignity,” said another.
