The Tri-Nations was first contested in 1996 when South Africa, New Zealand and Australia formed SANZAR and pitted the Wallabies, All Blacks and Springboks against each other in the world’s premier Southern Hemisphere competition.
New Zealand claimed the first two tournaments in 1996 and 1997 before the Springboks lifted the trophy in 1998. Since then, the All Blacks have won it seven times - the last four years on consecutive occasions – while the Boks only other tournament success came in 2004.
Australia has also won the tournament twice.
