JOHANNESBURG - Queues were heavily backed up at the Gauteng Education Department's district offices in Soweto, as dozens of grade 1 and 8 pupils battled to find space at public schools.

Some parents who've visited the department's offices to plead for placement told Eyewitness News that they were running out of patience.

This after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga pleaded with parents and caregivers to wait ten days for their children to be placed.

Refiloe Phamotse's daughter was supposed to start grade 8 on Wednesday, but she said it hurt her that they had to beg the education department to get placement.

“My daughter was already placed but when I went to the school, I found that her name is not on the list.”

Theo Jephta travelled from the Western Cape to document his daughter's first day in high school, but he said he arrived to find out she was not placed.

“As a photographer, I've documented their first days of school. The first day she sat on the toilet, I documented that.”

Both parents said while ten days was too long to wait, they had no other choice.
