CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have opened an inquest docket following the deaths of two fishermen in Lamberts Bay Harbour on the Cape West Coast.

The men drowned after their fishing boat capsized on Saturday.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) report, a third fisherman who survived the incident is recovering in hospital.

The NSRI said fellow crew on the fishing boat, who rescued the one man, had searched in vain for the two others whose lifeless bodies were later found on the beach.

"During a sea and shoreline search, police spotted the two missing men in shallow surf. They waded into the surf and recovered both men onto the shore," said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

"Sadly, both men were declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The bodies of the two deceased men were taken into the care of government health forensic pathology services."
