Assisted suicide or euthanasia is against the law in South Africa.
However, this is not the case in other parts of the world which is why De Swardt booked a trip to Switzerland.
De Swardt has been living with extreme pain due to skin cancer, which was diagnosed in 2010.
She also had to have her leg amputated after excessive radiation treatment, which has hindered her quality of life.
According to the George Herold, the 63-year-old said that she had lost the will to live.
Her two children reportedly support her decision and have been spending her last few days by her side.
She will undergo the assisted suicide on Wednesday, 31 January.
