JOHANNESBURG - A 57-year-old man accused of interfering with a motorcade convoy escorting a foreign VIP dignitary to the Lanseria Airport is expected to appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning.

The man was arrested on Sunday after he attempted to disrupt the motorcade on three occasions before police pulled him over.

It’s understood that the motorcade was for the Deputy President of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) country.

The police’s Athlenda Mathe said the suspect faced a charge of reckless and negligent driving.

“The man, who is expected to appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrates Court, was warned by traffic officials and SAPS [South African Police Service] members escorting the VIP to stay away from the convoy, but he allegedly ignored warning signs.”

Mathe issued a stern warning, emphasising the importance of the public showing due respect to vehicles displaying blue lights.

“According to the National Road Traffic Act, vehicles displaying a blue light have an absolute right of way when it is safe to do so, and motorists are urged to give way for them. Civilians will be guilty of a crime.”
