Crystal Orderson speaks to Carte Blanche producer, Kate Barry.
Listen to the interview in the audio below.
Carte Blanche’s episode on Operation Nemo dives into the extent of sexual abuse plaguing boys at elite schools.
Operation Nemo is a specialised police investigation that looks into the targeting of school children by sports coaches, specifically water sports coaches.
This episode followed an investigation into a teacher from one of these schools in Johannesburg.
Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse doubles the risk of suicide later in life.
According to Barry, the extent of this sexual violence puts it into the category of organised crime.
“As soon as there are two or more perpetrators that are linked by a particular crime or set of circumstance or even through WhatsApp messages as in this case, it is regarded as a syndicate.”
- Kate Barry, Carte Blanche producer
One of the family’s that Carte Blanche spoke to lost their son as a result of the sexual abuse he faced, and the perpetrator has not yet been prosecuted.
