With yet another petrol price increase on the cards, we could all use a little help making those litres last longer.

Here are six easy tips to help make your full tank last longer:

Don’t speed

Speed is one of the biggest contributing factors to rapid fuel consumption.

If you are series about getting the most litres per kilometre, put your bad driving habits in the past and soon, your vehicle’s fuel economy will improve drastically.

Keep your tyres pumped up

You may not realise it, but your tyre pressure can affect how much fuel your car uses.

Not too sure about what your tyre pressure should be? Manufacturers usually have it stuck on the inside of the driver’s door.

If you find that some of your tyres are well under the recommended pressure, in comparison to the rest, it is recommended that you take your car to a tyre specialist to check for any slow punctures.

Don’t over rev your engine

If you want to save fuel, leave the excessive revving for the movies.

While it might seem cool for the moment, all that reviving will have your engine burning more fuel.

Never skip a service

There is a reason why your vehicle has a service book with mileage milestones, try your best to stick to them.

Not only is it for the health of your car, ensuring it operates at its best and not relying on burning extra fuel, but it is also for your own safety.

Don’t leave your car idling

Decide whether you’re on or off because idling will get you nowhere (literally) all while burning fuel.

As a rule, if you’re in a queue or waiting for waiting for someone for more than 10 seconds, switch off your car.

Open your windows

Air conditioning can sometimes be the perfect accompaniment on a hot day but, in most cars, the AC system uses fuel to operate.

Over time, this could be the reason why your fuel tank hits reserve more often.

Try to only use the AC when it’s absolutely necessary, and don’t blast it on high-fan speed either.

When you can (and it is safe to do so), rather open your windows or use your car’s fan to regulate the temperature.
