Lester Kiewit interviews Mosa Rakgokong, Western Cape South African Policing Union Deputy Chair.

In times of crisis, it's essential to contact 10111 as the primary point of contact.

However, the South African Police Service (Saps) has admitted to experiencing a communication system outage for over a week.

During a prior discussion with Ian Cameron from Action Society SA, he highlighted the difficulties of using 10111 for serious crimes due to the inability to connect with the flying squad amidst the system breakdown.

As a workaround, Saps had to resort to WhatsApp, but this proved ineffective without a stable signal and data connection.

An unnamed source suggests that this problem has persisted for more than five years, attributing it to ageing radio systems.

The whistleblower asserts that a short-term solution is unattainable, with a complete network overhaul being necessary.

Rakgokong attributes the problem to inadequate management, stating that relying on WhatsApp is insufficient for crime prevention.

He believes that with better management, this issue could have been addressed much earlier.
