University of the Western Cape's Fairy Godmother helps students in need one request at a time
If you're a UWC student in need of help, the Fairy Godmother can help.
Clarence Ford speaks to everyday hero, Fairy Godmother who's real identity is anonymous. Listen to how people in need are helped one request at a time.
Yes, University of the Western Cape has a Fairy Godmother.
What does the Fairy Godmother do?
The Fairy Godmother offers financial help to registered students at UWC who are in need by connecting them with funders - the help received is often life-changing.
The Fairy Godmother says she selects students to help based on how practical and realistic it will be to help the student.
Fairy Godmother shares the story of how this network of help started...
"We helped a young man who applied to write a special exam with a motivation that he did not have taxi fair - just R60 to get to campus and back to write the initial exam. We were able to help, he completed his law degree and is currently doing his articles. He was the first person we helped, we shared his story on Facebook which enabled and kickstarted the Fairy Godmother's services to other students. We have many success stories like this."

There are more stories like this to read on the Fairy Godmother's Facebook page.
While some students request help with taxi fair, other chronic student needs include help with groceries, feminine hygiene products and other basic needs.
The Fairy Godmother who chooses to stay anonymous says that someone you sit next to in class might be struggling but remain hopeful that a good education might change their circumstances.
"People sitting next to you probably need to choose between lunch and taxi fair - how do we look at ourselves in the mirror when we know that this is the reality of our country. Most of South Africa is poor and desperate and the hope that an education presents for someone will this economic background, is huge. So people make enormous sacrifices just to get an education, just to get a shot at a better life. We have to face up to it. These stories are not unusual." Fairy Godmother - UWC
Yes, students are assisted with funding but it is not enough...
"Student funding from universities exist but most of them give students R500 a month for living expenses which is not enough. Most students are breadwinners and help their families survive." Fairy Godmother - UWC
Why the anonymity?
Not only is the Fairy Godmother anonymous, so are funders and students who request help which is an intentional choice.
"It's not about me, it's about the students. All requests are posted anonymously too because it's to protect students' dignity because it can be difficult to ask for help. It's a joy and it's a privilege to help."
