Lester Kiewit interviews Arab Barghouti, son of senior Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti.

Listen below.

Many Palestinians regard the imprisoned Barghouti as their equivalent of Nelson Mandela, envisioning him as a potential future president.

Last week, Hamas' senior political leader Ismail Haniyeh was adamant in his demand for Barghouti to be among the Palestinians to be released in any cease-fire agreement with Israel.

This demand marks one of Hamas' most specific requests since negotiations for the release of prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages commenced.

It brings renewed attention to Barghouti, who continues to hold a central role in Palestinian politics despite spending more than two decades behind bars.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed the proposal.

Barghouti argues Netanyahu prioritises his political ambitions over ending the genocide in Gaza and suggests a disregard for the well-being of both Israeli and Palestinian populations.

"Netanyahu has been very clear, he doesn't want to end the war, doesn't want to end the genocide of Gaza."

"My father represents that voice that can bring political partnership between all parties."
