JOHANNESBURG – Athletics South Africa (ASA) has named the squads that will represent South Africa at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on 30 March.

Eyewitness News caught up with Christopher Swart who will be representing the country in the mixed senior relay (4x2km) alongside Simonay Weitsz, Danielle Verster, and Boikanyo Motlhamme.

“Competing in the mixed senior relay requires seamless teamwork and coordination among team members. Communication is key, both on and off the track. Each member needs to know their role and be prepared to execute it to the best of their ability” said Swart.

The runner added that trust and reliance on one another are essential, as every second counts in a relay race.

“Practice and rehearsal are crucial to refining handoffs and transitions, ensuring that everyone is synchronised and focused on the common goal of achieving success for the team.”

The 23-year-old took up athletics at a young age and was inspired by watching elite athletes on television and dreamed of emulating their success. With the support of coaches and mentors, he began training seriously and gradually progressed through local, regional, and national competitions.

“Making the World Athletics Cross Country Championships team is a tremendous honour and accomplishment for me. It represents the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.”

He told Eyewitness News that athletics became not only a passion but also a lifestyle, shaping his identity and teaching him valuable lessons about perseverance, resilience, and self-discipline.

“Being selected to represent my country on the world stage is a validation of my abilities as an athlete and a testament to the support of my coaches, teammates, and loved ones. It's an opportunity to showcase my talent, compete against the best in the world, and hopefully, inspire others to pursue their athletic dreams.”

Swart was one of four elite athletes who broke the sub-four minute barrier at the Under Armour 'All Out Mile' event at Green Point Athletics Stadium in 2023.

He said this year, he is hoping to achieve both personal and team success.

“I've set ambitious goals for myself in terms of performance and results, but I'm also focused on enjoying the process and appreciating the journey along the way. I want to qualify for the Olympic team in 1500 metres.”

Swart has competed at several national championships, set a few personal records, and represented South Africa at a few international competitions including the World Student Games in China, and the World Student Cross Country Championships in Oman.

His message to young athletes is dedication and resilience.

"Embrace the journey of improvement and don't be afraid to push beyond your comfort zone. Surround yourself with positive influences, whether it's supportive coaches, teammates, or mentors who can help guide and inspire you along the way.

Remember that setbacks and challenges are inevitable, but they also present opportunities for growth and learning. Stay committed to your goals and believe in your ability to achieve them, one step at a time.”
