JOHANNESBURG - A grade 10 pupil accused of stabbing his schoolmate to death is expected to appear at the Lenasia Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 18-year-old from Oakdale Secondary School in Ennerdale is facing a murder charge after he allegedly stabbed grade 8 pupil, Siyanda Malinga, outside the school gate last week.

The pupil attacked Malinga and a group of other learners as he got off a bus on Thursday morning.

Another grade 10 pupil is recovering in hospital following the brawl.

It's understood Malinga refused to pay his alleged bully R5, which the 18-year-old is understood to have demanded daily.

A neighbour, who spoke to Eyewitness News, described Malinga as a thoughtful and unproblematic child.

She explained what is believed to have happened:

"They say Siyanda was now owing R25. He was paying R5 a day and they will tell you: "Today you don’t have it, tomorrow is R10, tomorrow is R15" and so the day before he was owing almost R25. So, as he got off the bus, they were waiting for him outside and he took out a knife and stabbed Siyanda."

Malinga’s death sparked outrage in the community, prompting residents to take to the streets in protest against the rampant issue of bullying in schools in the south of Johannesburg.
