ANC integrity commission calls for removal of almost 100 corruption-implicated leaders from candidate lists: Report

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC)'s integrity commission has recommended that over 90 of the party's members implicated in corruption and widespread state capture be excluded from the party's election candidate list.

The City Press reported on Sunday that out of the 97 implicated members, five were cleared by the integrity commission and another 62 have been referred for disciplinary hearings.

According to the newspaper, the commission's report was handed to ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula ahead of the IEC's 8 March deadline for political parties to submit their candidate lists for Parliament and the provincial legislatures.

The governing party's electoral committee flagged 97 members during the candidate nominations by the branches and the interviewing process.

According to the City Press report, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has been cleared of any wrongdoing relating to the 2020 theft of more than US$580,000 at his Phala Phala farm.

The party's national chairperson Gwede Mantashe has also been cleared of corrupt allegations after corruption-implicated company Bosasa installed a security system at his home.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, whose sexual assault case at the Kruger National Park in 2022 was withdrawn, was also reportedly among those cleared.

The integrity commission recommended that the party's senior leaders with questionable integrity be barred from standing for public office.

The party's national executive committee is set to discuss and approve the candidate lists on Monday.

The commission's report has compelled the ANC's top seven leadership to call an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss its implications.
