Parly Speaker investigated for receiving over R2m in kickbacks from SANDF contractor

JOHANNESBURG - The Sunday Times has revealed that Parliament Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is being probed in connection with allegations that she was paid millions of rand in cash bribes by a South African National Defence Force contractor.

According to the newspaper, the Speaker solicited money and was paid up to R2.3 million in cash on 10 different occasions.

The money, the paper revealed, was delivered in gift bags by defence industry businesswoman Nombasa Ntsodwa-Ndlovu.

It’s understood that the Investigating Directorate (ID) started digging six months ago, with only a select few within the directorate in the loop.

Ntsodwa-Ndlovu accused the Speaker in an affidavit of making several demands for cash – initially through the late Secretary of Defence, Sam Gulube, and then directly.

She said she personally handed over the wads of cash between November 2016 and July 2019.

The businesswoman testified under the Section 204 of the Criminal Procedure Act – which allows a witness to incriminate themselves and co-operate with the National Prosecuting Authority - in return for immunity from prosecution.

The ID said it doesn’t comment on any of its investigations.

Meanwhile, Mapisa-Nqakula told the Sunday paper that she wasn’t aware of the probe and that she is yet to be questions by the ID.
