Political journos team up for new book on modern history of the ANC
As the nation gears up for its most important election since 1994, a new book by Adriaan Basson and Qaanitah Hunter seeks to answer the question of who will rule South Africa.
Drawing on years of reporting from the front line, two of the country's best-known political journalists have come together to pen a new book, 'Who Will Rule South Africa?'
In it, Adriaan Basson and Qaanitha Hunter highlight how "corruption and greed subsumed a liberation movement by turning a party of freedom fighters into one of villains."
The book is an account of the state of the nation, 30 years after South Africa became a democracy, and tracks the modern history of the ANC, from Mandela to Ramaphosa.
"It was important for Qaanitah and I to look back. It's not only an important year because of the election but because we're celebrating 30 years of democracy."

"One has to look back and say how did we get here, what did we get right and what did we get wrong, and if you're the ANC and your'e looking at what's coming in this election and looking at all the polls, a lot has gone wrong and we try to explain some of that."

Basson and Hunter also map out the likely scenarios for a coalition government after the 2024 election and what it will mean for the country if politicians such as John Steenhuisen, Julius Malema or Herman Mashaba gain access to the Union Buildings.
"One of the big things to look for in this election is KwaZulu-Natal. I think the IFP and the DA has got a very clever and creative cooperation agreement where they don't oppose each other in by-elections."

"I'm looking to that province and Gauteng as probably the most exciting results of this election, but nationally it's going to be interesting."
