Africa Melane speaks to Luan Dreyden of TEFL Academy about getting qualified to teach online or while travelling.

What is TEFL?

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. In other words, teaching English to students where the language is not widely spoken or understood.

If you're already a teacher, you can do a TEFL course as a stepping stone to teach online or overseas.

Where can you teach?

With a TEFL qualification, you can teach in one of the countries on The TEFL Academy's list. They provide a work visa, or you can teach online from the comfort of your own home.

"After attaining the TEFL qualification, the majority of students go overseas and make a life there while exploring a new culture for a longer period of time. But we also have students who choose to do the course and stay in South Africa and teach online."
- Luan Dreyden, Teacher - TEFL Academy

At the TEFL Academy, you can enrol in any of the following TEFL courses:

Level 3 TEFL Certificate

A Level 3 TEFL certificate is an introductory course. It is offered online and leads to a 120-hour TEFL certificate. It is the best option if you want to find casual work teaching English, such as volunteer teaching, or teaching whilst backpacking.

Online Level 5 TEFL Diploma

A Level 5 TEFL diploma course goes into more detail. It can be studied online or online with classroom learning (combined) and leads to a 168-hour TEFL diploma.

It is the best option if you want to find formal work teaching English, such as contracted employment, or government teaching programmes, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursement and help getting visas.

Dreyden says Cape Town is a popular destination for TEFL teachers from other countries.

"Cape Town is seen as an English learning destination. Lots of teachers are still getting the TEFL certificate. Other international students coming from Saudi Arabia, Germany and Brazil... opt to teach English in Cape Town and love it."
