"You got this."

That seems to be the message from the United States (US) to South Africa, following the Democratic Alliance's plea that the States help ensure free and fair elections here in May.

In a letter, penned by the party's Emma Louise Powell, the party appealed for help to provide resources for independent domestic observers at the polls.

Specifically detailing former President Jacob Zuma's MK party, and what it called the ANC's desperation to 'retain electoral support', the DA asked for help to 'safeguard against any attempts to disrupt the democratic process or negatively influence the South African electorate through misinformation and disinformation campaigns.'

But, through its Pretoria-based spokesperson, David Feldman, the response from America suggests it has no such concerns.

"Our response is, South Africa is sovereign country, it runs its own elections and the US recognises that the IEC has a long-standing and excellent reputation for operating free and fair elections."

"We have every confidence that that will be the case in this election."

So, would that mean that the US won't be sending assistance for the polls, asks Bingwa?

"Those are decisions that are up to the South African government and the IEC. It's a sovereign country."
