CoCT says it's using high profile investigative work to identify construction mafia

16 March 2024 | 11:59The City of Cape Town says it's had to intensify its investigations to stop the scourge of extortion on construction sites.
CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says old technology used by the police service directly affects its ability to deal with sophisticated criminal activities.
According to the city, its service delivery projects that are targeted by the so-called construction mafia are largely protected by private security.

The city says its projects get interrupted from all points which necessitates a high profile investigative network to trace those responsible.
The metro's MMC for urban mobility Rob Quintas says they're working hard to nail the culprits.
"We do have the names of the people involved and responsible in terms of the intimidation that is happening to our people on site. So, we have sought urgent relief from the court to interdict them so they don't go on site on an adhoc basis."
