Vladimir Putin to overtake Joseph Stalin as longest-serving Russian leader
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has led his country since 1999, has won the Russian election by getting 87% of the votes.

Russian President Putin secured victory in Russia's general elections on the weekend, getting 87% of the vote.
This outcome will see Putin becoming the longest-serving leader in Russia's history, overtaking Joseph Stalin.

The result was unsurprising as Putin systematically removed his rivals. Earlier this month, his most prominent challenger, Alexey Navalny, died in prison. Many other Russian leaders are either dead, in jail, or exiled.
Few people or institutions outside of Russia consider the elections anything but a sham, but protesters face extreme danger from authorities.
