Rapid increase in criminals stoning motorcyclists on CT highways

The Motorcyclists Association Western Cape has seen a surge over the last year or two in incidents where motorcyclists are attacked on the R300 and N2.

Criminals are throwing bricks at motorcyclists while they are driving intending to rob them once their bikes crash.
"The modus operandi is to either incapacitate the rider or the motorcycle."

Last month, a motorcyclist was killed during one of these attacks.
Worship says that bikers are not protected like people who are in cars.
"We are exposed, every part of our motorcycle is exposed."

He has described these incidents as unique and alarming, pointing out that criminals have gotten smarter.
"They take your cellphone, wallet and very expensive helmets and leathers and gear. Helmets cost from R5000."

The Association has engaged extensively with provincial and local traffic authorities about these attacks, says Worship, and he is hopeful to get some fruitful discussion soon on how to combat this issue.
