CAPE TOWN - As the world commemorates World Water Day, the City of Cape Town says the ever-growing population in the city has resulted in its water and sanitation department being under pressure.

World Water Day advocates for communities, governments and organisations to take steps to conserve the important resource.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the metro is working hard to ensure access to clean water for residents and maintain the national quality standards.

"We have wonderful quality very, very clean and safe drinking water. I would drink ours over many, many other places in the world... But you know at the moment our city's programmes are heavily investing in water and sanitation infrastructure because that's a great need in our city."

The city's current dam levels are at 68%, an improvement from 2023's 55% during the same period.
