Wally’s Cave remains CLOSED, trespassers will be fined R3500
Hikers are continuing to ignore warnings that Wally’s Cave and surrounding paths are off limits.
Lester Kiewit speaks to Kosta Papageorgiou, Chairperson of Friends of Lion’s Head.
Since 2017, Wally's Cave and the route leading up to it has been closed to the public after being deemed "highly dangerous", says Papageorgiou.
Despite authorities "strictly" warning the public that the route remains closed, hikers continue to hike to the picturesque spot to score the very Instagrammable and "iconic" picture of the view of Table Mountain from the cave.
Anyone found crossing the barrier and fence will be fined R3500.
"It was never an official trail to begin with. It's a struggle to police it and people are being rebellious - it's a case of tell people not to go somewhere, they will to get a picture for social media."
- Kosta Papageorgiou, Chairperson - Friends of Lion’s Head
"If we can't stop people from going to Wally's Cave, perhaps it's time to rehabilitate the area, actually make it safe and just take away the mystery around it... I don't know..."
- Kosta Papageorgiou, Chairperson - Friends of Lion’s Head
