Clement Manyathela interviews Veli Mbele, spokesperson for the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
Listen below.
The registration of four Educor institutions has been revoked by the DHET, because they failed to provide evidence of their financial viability.
Dr. Blade Nzimande, Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister, disclosed the deregistrations during a media conference in Pretoria on Tuesday.
He said these private establishments hadn't adhered to the stipulations outlined in the 2016 Regulations for the Registration of Private Higher Education Institutions, nor relevant sections of the Higher Education Act.
The colleges were notified of the decision as early as July 2023 through official gazettes, Mbele says.
But the schools have exercised their legal right to appeal, he adds.
Mbele says they sought multiple extensions, but didn't provide any evidence addressing the concerns, such as failing to submit audited financial reports for the 2021/2022 fiscal year.
While some cancellations will take effect immediately, others will be granted a transition period for phasing out.
"In line with our decision and our obligation to uphold the law, we cannot treat any academic institutions differently."
