Nine suspected criminals, who reportedly opened fire on police, were killed on Wednesday morning during a shootout in KwaZulu Natal's Desai township.
Nhlanhla Mabaso, EWN KZN Reporter, says police were tipped off as to the whereabouts of the group.
He adds that community members viewed the shooting as a ‘breakthrough’, since criminals had been terrorising the community, especially when they tried to report crimes.
“If you approach the police, you will be on [the criminals'] target list.”

Police claim they had no choice but to fire back at the criminals, even though it appears they weren't all armed, Mabaso says.
