JOHANNESBURG - Police have confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs soccer player, Luke Fleurs, has been shot dead in a hijacking in Honeydew.

The fatal shooting took place at a petrol station on Wednesday night, with one of the suspects fleeing the scene with Fleurs' car.

Officials said the 24-year-old was waiting to be attended to when he was approached by unkown gunmen, who told him to get out of the vehicle.

Fleurs began his soccer career in 2013, when he joined the Ubuntu Cape Town Academy.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said Fleurs was killed by a single bullet to the upper body.

"One suspect drove off with the victim's car followed by his accomplice. The victim was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival. Police have opened a case of murder and car hijacking for investigation, and no arrests have been made yet."
