How to prepare
When travelling to a foreign country, be sure to always have data loaded on your device in case of an emergency, says Motylska.
Also send all important documents to your phone, such as boarding passes and hotel reservations, for easy access without Wi-Fi or data.
Set a budget, but also have some extra money in case of a crisis.
“You never want to be having to call family and friends for bank transfers.”

How to keep safe
Divvy up copies of your itinerary and location with trusted contacts back home, Motylska adds.
You should also share your travel documents and tour schedule with the SA embassy or consulate so they can help you if there's a problem.
Use verifiable service providers like Uber and Bolt, so it’s easier to track you when travelling around, especially if you feel unsafe.
Motylska says if you do find yourself in danger, you should send a bulk broadcast message to contacts with as much information as possible.
Also ensure your most valuable items, such as your passport, are on you at ALL times.
Travel alone… in a group, with the right travel company
Motylska lists some companies that specialise in helping younger travellers head off on adventures, including Contiki, Intrepid and G Adventures. They allow those under the age of 35 to travel as part of the same tour group.
He suggets older travellers should consider Trafalgar Tours, On the Go Tours, and Odyssey Traveller. They guide you to the best sites, affordable accommodation, and give you the opportunity to meet some like-minded individuals.
