Somerset West driving licence facility temporarily closed due to weather damage

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is urging motorists in Somerset West looking to use its driving licence testing facility to consider alternative centres.

This after the facility was forced to close due to damage caused by recent strong winds in and around the Mother City. 

The City's traffic spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs:

"The facility was damaged by strong winds overnight [Saturday]. Cape Town Traffic Service apologises for any inconvenience caused."

The Somerset Mall was also forced to close its doors after its roof sheeting was blown off by strong wind.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said similar incidents were reported in and around Cape Town.

The metro's disaster risk management spokesperson, Sonica Lategan:

"DRM is also responding to Morkels Cottage as well as the Donkerbos informal settlement in Somerset West, where the roofs have blown off some structures. Emergency Medical Services responded to the Morkels Cottage as there have been a few injuries.

“There've also been reports of roofs blown off in Somerset West, Macassar, Mitchells Plain and Clifton. The Recreation and Parks Department is clearing uprooted trees in Somerset West, Macassar, Sea Point and Philippi."
