On the latest episode of Upside of Failure, Relebogile Mabotja speaks to comedian, Marc Lottering.

Listen below.

The award-winning comedian from Cape Town first exploded onto the scene in 1997 with his first show ‘After The Beep’ at the Cape Flats.

Fast forward more than 20 years, and Lottering says he doesn’t really have any failures.

“I put that down to having a seriously small inner circle. We think the same way. Be a good person in and out of business, and stick to your word. And trust your instincts about people.”
Marc Lottering, comedian

This way of thinking has proven to be fruitful, as his jokes and personality continue to reach people across the country and the world.

He continues to share stories about his life: the good, the bad and the ugly.

“For me, I acknowledge that there is a lot of darkness in comedy, in terms of where it comes from, but I have the opportunity to decide whether I am going to stay in that space.”
Marc Lottering, comedian
“I believe that what I am doing with my standup comedy, I believe it's a calling. It runs in my family. It’s about bringing goodness, spreading good news, and making people feel good… Every morning when I wake up, I cannot think of something else that I would want to do.”

This year he will be inducted into the South African Comics' Choice Hall of Fame.

“I went from being a shy boy in the Cape Flats… I am proud of myself.
