Bulk toilet paper, coffee, collagen - items South Africans spend money on

Clarence Ford speaks to Laurian Venter, from OneDayOnly.co.za who outlines five product categories that South Africans are prioritising despite the cost of living.

The high cost of living - due to rising electricity prices, high interest rates, and increasing fuel costs – is changing consumers’ spending habits and buying behaviour, says Venter.

If it's not a need, it's got to go seems to be a new mantra in most homes.

"We are definitely finding that people are feeling the pinch and scaling back".
- Laurian Venter, OneDayOnly.co.za

Many South Africans are cutting corners to save money, says Venter.

She says there are things South Africans are still spending money on while two spending habits are emerging such as:

1) Essential items like toilet paper, and toiletries. Washing powder and dishwashing liquid are also at the top of the list.

2) Bulk-buying remains increasingly popular because it helps South Africans save some Randelas.

While top selling items on OneDayOnly.co.za include:

  • Toilet paper pack of 64s 'biggest item of the year'
  • Instant coffee (when it's on special)
  • Health products such as collagen, mouthwash, sunscreen, colour correcting toothpaste are top sellers as people are spending money on their well-being
  • Loadshedding related products
