Commuters on the 7am Gautrain from Midrand got more than they bargained for on Tuesday (30 April) as the train attempted to race an SA Air Force helicopter to Centurion.
It was track versus air as the train battled it out against the Air Force’s Alouette II helicopter.
Travelling a distance of over 20 km in under eight minutes, the helicopter reached Centurian way ahead of the Gautrain.
Although, the Gautrain was also not going at its full speed – 160km/h.
The stunt was to promote the SA Air Force’s upcoming Museum Air Show on Saturday, 4 May.
The annual show helps generate the necessary funds to help maintain the museum’s aircrafts.
The Museum Air Show takes place at the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing Air (previously known as Air Force Base Swartkop) on Old Johannesburg Road in Valhalla, Pretoria.
Tickets are available on Ticketpro – R50 for kids, and R120 for people aged 16 and above.
