There were cheers of joy at the site of the George building collapse on Saturday (11 May) when a survivor was pulled from the rubble on Day 5 of the rescue operation.

The George Municipality confirmed that the man was transported to hospital after being stabilised by the onsite medical team.

This brings the number of recoveries to 42, with the death toll at 13.

39 of the 81 known people to be on site at the time of the collapse on Monday are still unaccounted for.

14 survivors are currently being treated in hospital.

The rescued man has beenĀ identified as a tiler, 33-year-old Gabriel Guambe.

Thanking the search and rescue teams, Premier Alan Winde said a survivor being successfully extracted from the debris after more than 116 hours is nothing short of a miracle.
