CAPE TOWN - Eskom has rejected the City of Cape Town's proposed request to take over Eskom supply areas.

The municipality wants to distribute electricity directly to all Capetonians, including those currently supplied by the power utility.

However, Eskom said that won't be selling or transferring any of its assets.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis broke the news to a group of Eskom supplied residents in Elsies River on Monday.

Hill-Lewis said he's hugely disappointed by Eskom's decision.

He said that this is a huge blow to residents who must deal with Eskom's poor service constantly.

"Listen to what Eskom is saying to you, and to all of your areas, Eskom says you cannot have the loadshedding benefit that Cape Town offers its residents. You are forced to stick with failing Eskom loadshedding."

The mayor said that they will push until Eskom changes its tune.
