JOHANNESBURG - Billy Monama’s Mayibuye iAfrika concert is back after 2023’s sold-out inaugural show took South Africa by storm.
The 2024 line-up boasts greats including Ringo Madlinbgozi, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, Mahotella Queens, Hope Masike, Simphiwe Dana and Siphokazi.
The concert’s second edition will feature a two-night extended run on 24 and 25 May at the Joburg Theatre and is set to commemorate South Africa’s landmark 30 years of democracy.
The event will also include a one-day informative workshop, featuring lectures by academics, researchers, musicians and music educators.
According Monama, the event’s brainchild, Mayibuye iAfrika was created as “a musical commemoration of South African freedom songs and their composers with the aim of promoting social cohesion, cross-cultural understanding and rich artistic African heritage and the rebirth of Ubuntu”.
Speaking about 2024’s concert, James Ngcobo, Joburg City Theatres artistic director, said the production “stands as a beacon of unity”.
“This year's concert promises to be a profound, testament to our nation's journey towards freedom and cultural richness.”
