CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has lauded the provincial government, as he chaired the last Cabinet meeting for the current administration on Wednesday.

Winde heaped praise on his Cabinet members for dealing with the province's challenges over the past five years.

The current administration will come to an end when the country votes at this month’s general elections.

The premier used the meeting to take stock of the progress made by the administration.

"It gave me an opportunity to reflect on the jobs numbers and the programmes and the enabling environment and the growth plan, the jobs for growth plan, the energy plan and the megawatts that are already coming into the system, the safety plan and the drop in murder rate..."

Winde also commended the massive coordinated response to the building collapse in George, describing the combined effort as world-class.

"What an horrendous happening... really tragic, but also an opportunity that shows once again that our disaster teams are able to step up with a world-class response and the citizens, more importantly, really come along and do what South African citizens do every single time."

During the meeting, Winde also slammed the signing into law of the National Health Insurance Bill, saying the Western Cape government was considering legal options to halt the implementation of the bill.
